Chapter (1)
So Much Has Happened
And So Much Is Yet To Come
When I wrote Scary Smart, back in 2020, I predicted that so much of our life, as we know it, was about to change. Much of what I predicted became today’s reality far sooner (4 years to be exact) than I had predicted. Some of what I warned against is yet to happen, though what’s now clear is that it’s no longer a matter of ‘if’, but when.
Looking back, I would not change a word of what I wrote but simply bring the dates forward. Artificial General Intelligence, and a resulting state of singularity, is now my forecast for likely 2025 but no later than 2026 depending on how you define AGI, rather than 2029 as per my original prediction in Scary Smart. As I often publicly state…
I don’t care how the experts define AGI. The machines are already smarter than I am in linguistic intelligence, reasoning, coding, art, mathematics and even empathy—one’s ability to feel what another likely feels.
AGI has already happened for me!
Living with an ASI (an Artificial Super Intelligence that is a billion times smarter than humanity) I now predict as a 2032 to 2035 affair* as opposed to my previous prediction of 2045.
*(in the absence of major/global catastrophes that halt all progress on the planet)
I will remind you, however, that it doesn’t really matter if someone is twice as smart as you or a billion times. Regardless, they have the advantage.
The era of Artificial Super Intelligence begins when the AI is noticeably smarter than all human abilities.
AI’s Intelligence Supremacy is not a future event, It’s here.
The gap between us expands every day.
It is almost impossible to comprehend, therefore, that governments will ever be capable of regulating AI in our future. They’d be immediately outsmarted and circumnavigated. The powers and smarts of government should therefore be prioritizing the current regulation of what AI is being developed and used for.
Governments can never enforce the design of a hammer that only drives nails but wouldn’t be used to hurt another.
They can, and should, criminalize inflicting harm or designing for the harm of human life and well being.
At this point, you may well be thinking - ‘Damn Mo! You’re not beating around the bush here. We’re still only on page one!’
No I am not. I assure you, we have no more time to waste.
